To get started with iWonder Surf, you will have to configure the device immediately after installation. There are two parts to setting up iWonder Surf to effectively filter and monitor web traffic on your iPhone or iPod touch. The first step is to install and configure the iWonder Surf software itself, and the second it to enable restrictions through the Settings control panel on the iPhone or iPod touch device.

Configuring and installing iWonder Surf for the first time on the first device
The first time you launch iWonder Surf you will be presented with the standard splash screen that tells you to begin surfing the web. Please note that any attempt to go to a website will put you into the configuration screen. The configuration must be completed before iWonder Surf will allow you to surf any websites on the device. If this is your first installation, and you do not have an iWonder Surf profile, you will touch the “Create iWonder Profile” button. This will allow you to set up a master account to control all of the devices in your family.

Initial Set Up For Creating A New iWonder Surf Profile

After selecting the Create iWonder Profile button, your device will prompt you for your email address. Your email address is what you use to log in to the iWonder Surf management console to view traffic, enable controls, etc on the devices. Since your email address is unique and is not easily forgotten it’s ideal to use it for your login name. After you enter your email address, the device will prompt you to create a password. At this point, enter your password, and then verify the password. The final box asks you to name the device. This is the name of the device that will show up on your iWonder Surf management console screen. So for example, if this is Jimmy’s iPhone, you may want to name it Jimmy’s iPhone. The device name is important, especially if you have multiple iPhones or iPods in your household, as this will allow you to set different rules for each device, and monitor these devices separately. After entering the password and device name, touch the Register Device button. After a few seconds you will get a confirmation screen that says the device has been initialized successfully and that you may begin surfing.

Configuring and installing iWonder Surf for additional devices
After you have installed iWonder Surf on one device your iWonder Surf profile has been created. You will want to keep all of your devices under your single profile so that you can monitor each device with your single log in. Setting up a second, third, fourth, fifth, etc device is very similar to the way you set up the first one, however this time you will touch the Add To Existing Profile Button.

Setting Up iWonder Surf On Additional Devices

As with the initial installation, you will be prompted for your email address, password, and to name the device. The difference here is that you will use the email address you set up the first time you installed iWonder Surf, rather than create a new one. When this is complete, touch the Register Device button. After a few seconds you will see the confirmation screen and will be able to begin surfing the web.

Restrict Safari by using the tools provided by Apple on your iPhone or iPod touch
In order for iWonder Surf to be effective, you will have to enable restrictions on your iPhone or iPod touch to prevent your child from using the Safari browser (as it is packaged with the iPhone and iPod touch). It’s important to note that even though they are not using Safari, they are using the Safari engine within the iPhone, so all websites and content will show up just as they would using Safari.

To Restrict Safari on your iPhone and iPod touch, perform the following:

Set restrictions:
1. Choose Settings from the Home Screen
1 Choose General > Restrictions, then tap Enable Restrictions.
2 Enter a four-digit passcode.
3 Reenter the passcode.
4 Set the restrictions on Safari by selecting the button next to Safari and making sure it is ON.

By doing this, Safari will be removed from the iPhone and iPod touch home screen. You can drag the iWonder Surf icon to the dock (bottom) of the phone if you choose so that it is in the same place Safari used to be.

To manage your devices, enable and disable websites and view activity, log in through your Mac, PC, or iPhone

When you select the Manage Users and Devices menu, you will be shown a list of the iPhone and iPod devices associated with your account. The status screen shows you summary information, including the device name, the current settings (Allow All, Filtered, Disabled), a View Traffic link, and an Edit Profile button. If you would like to see the websites that a particular iPhone or iPod has visited, click the View Traffic link for that particular device.

Viewing Traffic For A Specific iPhone or iPod touch
After selecting a device and the View Traffic button, you will be shown a list of every website that device has visited within the last 30 days. If the user looked at something specific in that website (for example, a particular profile on MySpace), you will also be shown the link to view that profile directly. Next to the website address, date, and time that the site was visited, you have the option of visiting that site directly from your Mac or PC, and to block that site directly. Clicking the View Site will open that website in a new window on your computer. Clicking the Block Site button will instantly block that site and that device will no longer be able to visit that site.

Edit Device Profile
You will notice on the main device management screen a button that says Edit Profile. You can edit each device individually and provide different permissions for each device. If you have a young child and a teenager, you may wish to impose different restrictions on them. When you edit a device, you are presented with the device configuration screen.

configscreen1
Individual Device Configuration Screen

You will be presented with the device name that you are configuring, the current setting (Filtered, Allow All, or Blocked), and buttons to Allow All, Block All, and to Edit Blocked Sites. You will also see at the bottom of the screen an option to “Block All Known Porn Sites”. We will go through each setting individually below.

Settings Click To Allow All
If you select the “Allow All” function, the device will have access to everything on the internet, regardless of any blocked sites you have set up for that device, or if you have the managed filters enabled (intelligent porn filter, etc). Allow All does exactly what it says, it allows everything. Logging is still enabled, so you will be able to see every site the device visits, however no site will be blocked.

Settings Click To Block All
The “Block All” function renders the device inoperable for web traffic. It disables all web traffic on the device. If the owner of the device tries to go to a web site, they will be stopped with a blocked message, and the attempt will be logged. So, even if a device is disabled, you will see what website the device owner attempted to visit.

Settings Edit Blocked Sites
Selecting the Edit Blocked Sites button will show you a list of all sites that you have explicitly blocked for that device. You can then enable site, or leave it disabled. It allows you to enable sites that you may have blocked earlier, or block sites that have not been blocked before.

Intelligent Block Lists, Such As Block All Known Porn Sites
Below the regular device configuration you will see options for intelligent block lists for different subject matters. Depending on the configuration you have selected, this list may have more than one option for you, but all profiles will have the Block All Known Porn sites. Next to the filter type, you will see if that filter is currently enabled or disabled. Please note that the sites located within an intelligent block list cannot be edited. They are automatically built by the iWonder Surf servers and updated automatically. If you enable an intelligent filter, all sites within that filter will be blocked. If you disable the intelligent filter, all sites in that filter will be permitted unless you have explicitly blocked them for that device. You can enable and disable intelligent filters by clicking the Enable or Disable function.

It is important to note that intelligent block lists are constantly updated. Currently there are almost one million websites classified as pornography in our database. That number grows daily based on new sites becoming available. If you enable an intelligent filter, when we update the filter, the block list is automatically updated for each device that has the intelligent filter enabled. By enabling the intelligent porn filter, as new sites are found, they are automatically blocked without you having to take any action.
